Nine times out of ten the culprit is a snapped torsion spring, a tripped safety sensor or a motor that's lost power. I check the spring and cables first, then work through the opener — most doors are lifting again within the hour.

A door that stops mid-travel usually means a lift cable has come off its drum, a roller has jumped the track, or the motor limit settings have drifted. I re-seat or replace the cables, straighten the track and reset the travel limits so the door completes a full cycle.

You'll hear a loud bang from the garage and the door suddenly feels impossibly heavy. The torsion spring above the door has fractured and the counterbalance is gone — I fit new high-cycle springs, re-tension them to the door's weight and test the balance before leaving.

If you can hear the motor humming while the door stays put, either the trolley has disengaged from the chain or a broken spring is leaving the motor with more weight than it can lift. I re-engage the carriage or replace the failed spring — never keep pressing the button, it burns out the motor.

Grinding usually points to a stripped drive gear inside the opener or steel rollers running dry in the tracks; squealing is typically an unlubricated torsion spring. I replace the worn gear or rollers, lubricate the moving parts and quieten the whole system down.

Once a fresh battery is ruled out, the fault sits in the receiver board or a failing capacitor inside the motor head — both common on openers past ten years. I re-code the remote, and if the board or capacitor has failed I repair or replace the unit on the spot.
